About Me

Hi! I'm Ja'lah (pronouced “Jay-lah”). I like to bring web designs to life! I develop clean web responsive code for web sites and web pages.

I was first introduced to HTML and CSS as a teenager by tinkering with profile themes on tumblr. Upon stumbling across this field, I decided that it was something I'd like to pursue as a career.

I started my college career at Towson University pursuing my degree in Computer Science. I spent 2 years studying C++ and Java. I transferred to Univeristy of Maryland Global Campus to put my complete focus on front-end web development. I began pursuing my bachelor's in Digital Media and Web Technology 3 years later.

I'm currently in my last semester, set to graduate December 2022!

Love Notes and Pens Synopsis

This project was trying to commincate my skills in the used of HTML, HTML tags, CSS3, and Javascript. In this project I developed the wireframes in figma. I also created a flow chart to show the path a consumer would take when trying to purchase a product. This website contains 5 item pages, a privacy policy, a contact page with an interactive map, and a form to submit a review. I would like to further develop this project going forward as it has potential to be a real e-commerce website.

Move The Ball Synopsis

This project is trying to communicate my skills in JavaScript and Bootstrap. I wanted to get experience using bootstrap as a front-end toolkit and use JavaScript to test my knowledge in HTML DOM manipulation. There are many companies that use toolkits and custom frameworks, so I thought this would be a good start. I built the framework using basic HTML and Bootstrap, then configured the buttons with JavaScript. You are able to move the ball around using the arrow buttons. You can also get creative and customize the ball! I wanted to see how much customization I could add into one small project. This is a nice small fun project to play create and play around in to learn JavaScript and Bootstrap.

Drinkies Synopsis

This project is trying to communicate my skills in User Interface and Experience, and E–Commerce website planning. I wanted to gain experience designing and planning out an e-commerce website using Figma. Planning the website in Figma made the building of the skeleton of the website with HTML a lot easier. I was able to easily determine which tags to use and where to utilize them. This project was created with just the HTML and CSS programming languages. The website also includes a sign-up form to obtain a Drinkies membership. The form does not include form validation, which is something I wish to incorporate on future personal projects.

Portfolio 1.0 Synopsis

This project is the first rendition of my portfolio. This portfolio was created for CMST 385 – Principles of Web Design and Technology 1 here at UMGC. This project showcases the basic knowledge and usage of HTML and CSS tags, classes, and lists. It also showcases my graphic design and color scheme skills. The color scheme for this project is a rainbow theme because my goal was to incorporate web development with vibrant art. In this project, I was able to create a navigation bar using links and use unordered lists. The navigation bar uses buttons, decorated as icons, to link to 3 different pages: the about page, projects page and contact page. Each page shows their respective information and link to each other throughout the site.

Sandwichies Synopsis

This project, “Sandwichies”, is a personal project used to simulate the creation of an HTML email. I wanted to try my hand at the design and implementation of this web marketing format. I wrote this project in Microsoft Visual Studio Code using just the basic HTML and CSS programming languages. The standard practice is to avoid using in-line styling, however for some mass email distributing platforms it is required, so I included my styling in that form. I wanted to aim for a classic, minimalistic design for this project and opted in for a black and white color scheme. By using this color theme, it shifts the focus onto the image, which is the product being sold, a sandwich or burger.

MGAKA Synopsis

This project is a personal project used to practice utilization of Figma, and my skills in User Interface and Experience Design. The goal of this project was to create an all–in–one landing, portfolio, and contact page for a client who is a comic book artist. The client in this project was looking to also get their E–commerce comic book shop website designed and built by me. I used Figma for this entire project. In Figma, you can utilize the column feature. This column feature allows you to mimic the 12–column setup that you create using CSS grid. Using the 12–column CSS grid ensures that your webpage can be setup to be web responsive, which was a big point that I wanted to make when completing this project. Because this design was set up using the 12–column CSS grid formatting, it can be easily written in code exactly how it was designed, which will satisfy the client.

Baby Bee's Chunky Knit Blankets Synopsis

This project was an assignment for CMST 308–User Experience and Interface Design here at UMGC. The goal of this website was to plan, design, and create a working demo for a website of our choice. I drafted the concept of an E–commerce website for a merchant that would sell chunky knit woven blankets. Outside of Figma, which is where I created the wireframes and demo, I created a mood board of websites from clothing businesses such as Nike, Old Navy, and Ugg. The demo allows the user to begin at the main landing page of the website. From there you can click the “Shop Blankets” call to action button, which will redirect you to the shop page. The shop page displays all the items in grid format, with their names, prices, and the add to cart button. There is also a filter system on the left side of the page that allows you to choose a specific blanket size. After clicking the add to cart button, you are redirected to the item detail page, allowing the user to customize the items and add multiple items if they wish. The price also updates as they increase the number of items in their cart. Clicking the add to cart button again will bring you to your shopping cart where you can add your coupon, then submit your purchase. After completing the purchase, the site asks you to leave a review. This project demonstrates my understanding of an e-commerce website workflow, and usability of its features to help a user purchase an item.
